ABOUT THE WORK
MATERIALS
Welded steel bars and wooden plinth
Watcher explores surveillance and our own complicity within it. I'm particularly interested in how accustomed we've become to being observed, and how we begin to adapt our behaviour without anyone necessarily asking us to.
The sculpture uses curved metal forms to explore ideas of observation, control and vulnerability. Presented alongside No One Asked Me to Kneel, the two works consider how submission can become something we participate in almost unconsciously.
I've also been using Watcher to experiment with composition and exhibition settings, exploring how its positioning, surrounding space and relationship to other works can influence how it's experienced.
For me, this piece is still part of an ongoing exploration of how surveillance shapes us, often without us even noticing.
