NO ONE ASKED ME TO KNEEL explores how surveillance shapes our behaviour, even when nobody is actively watching.
My research into surveillance has made me increasingly interested in how we begin to change our actions simply because we know we might be observed. We learn what is expected of us, and eventually that awareness becomes almost instinctive.
Through fragmented writing and abstract forms, the book examines the relationship between observation, power and obedience. It questions whether we really need to be told what to do when we have already learnt to regulate ourselves.
At its centre is the idea that control does not always need to be demanded. Sometimes, we already know how to comply.
